Score’s Even, badly beaten for second straight race
By Samuel Whyte
Fortunes favour the brave and that was the thought of owner of Mr. Mohammed ‘Nankoo’ Shariff, owner of Spit Fire, as he threw caution to the wind and entered the animal in the feature ‘A’ class and lower event in the President’s Cup horserace meet at Port Mourant yesterday despite some questions from connections of the Jumbo Jet Stable following the closeness of the finish with Jack in My Style.
She so special of The Jumbo Jet stable with Colin Ross edging out Cat Messiah of The Ghamsham Singh Stable with Blake on mount in a close race.
Spit Fire, which came in to the country some time last year with much reputation, has been showing tremendous form since its entry. Entered as a D3 animal it moved up in class to challenge the bigger animals and did not disappoint.
As the horses raced out of the starting gates in the 1700M event Score’s Even took to the front being hard pressed by Spit Fire with Jockey Randolph Richmond on board. As the race got deeper, Score’s Even was still pressing for the lead as Spit Fire held on. Into the far turn Spit Fire took over with Jack in My Style and Run Nana Run gaining ground as Score’s Even started to fade.
Into the homestretch Jack In My Style with Colin Ross on mount drew up alongside Spit Fire as the animals thundered down to the finishing line. It was Spit Fire with Richmond urging it on which was able to draw on some final reserves to nose ahead and win its biggest pay day of $1.2M and the President Cup which was presented by Finance Minister Ashnie Singh. Jack in My Style got second ahead of Run Nana Run with Score’s Even bringing up the rear. The Jumbo Jet connections questioned the final result with the horses seemingly in a dead heat. However, the win was awarded to Spit Fire, but the officials may have relook at the decision in fairness to all concerned.
Release the Beast of the Jumbo Jet Stable with Ross riding won the E1and lower event. The G2 and lower event saw Bridal Stone Corner with Richmond of the Marcel Crawford Stable producing a good run down the homestretch to take top honours.
The winner of the H1 and lower and 3 years old West Indies Bred maiden event saw She So Special of the Jumbo Jet stable winning a close battle from Cat Messiah.
Affinity won the J3 and lower event, while the K class and lower event was won by Massapaquea Dr of the Selso Crawford Stable. The top stable on show was the Jumbo Jet stable, while Richmond was adjudged the top jockey. Full details tomorrow.
