Football fans who missed the fourth night of action in the Busta Soft Shoe Tournament for whatever reason, must be kicking themselves in disgust when they receive feedback about the night’s matches being undoubtedly the best seen so far.
Every game produced some fine exhibition of skills and intense rivalry that have certainly set the tone for the remainder of the tournament and definitely a must see for the diehard fans of the sport.
From the onset, Broad Street got their campaign and the proceedings off to a positive start when they defeated a strong Durban Street side 2-0 with Jamal Cozier netting two beautiful goals to give them maximum points.
Next up was the encounter between Globe Yard and Back Circle which the former won by a 4-1 margin, but despite the lopsided result, fans were treated to a fine brand of attacking football and excellent interchanges.
Ryan Morrison booted in a brace, while Leon Roberts and Kevin Lewis netted a goal apiece.
Dexter Griffith fired in the lone response for Back Circle who have not looked at their best throughout the competition.
Despite the eventual outcome, Festival City and Tucville battled to an exciting 0-0 stalemate after both teams created numerous chances, but excellent defending combined with similar performances between the uprights kept both teams goalless.
The pint-sized Roy Cassou, who could be regarded as one of the most lethal strikers in the small goal format showed exactly why he is considered amongst the best as he led Albouystown to a 4-1 triumph over North East La Penitence.
Not getting the starter’s nod, Cassou came on and made an impact instantly when he raced on to a lofted cross from the right side to deliver a magnificent glancing header past the stranded goalkeeper in the 11th minute.
His teammate Marlon Nedd was unfortunate not to give them the lead when his powerfully struck right-footer crashed on to the crossbar, before rebounding into play.
The diminutive Cassou was in no mood to entertain any challenge from the opposition and he was again in the act and nearly got his second when he too cracked a fierce shot against the crossbar with the goalkeeper well beaten.
They maintained a slim 1-0 advantage at the half.
Three minutes after the resumption, Cassou again showed his class when he skipped past his marker from a pass from the back, before hitting the ball into the far corner.
North East La Penitence’s Colin Moore gave his side some hope when his free kick sliced off the foot of a defender and beat the keeper to his left in the 21st minute.
The overpowering Cassou for the third time of the night sprung into action to restore his team’s two-goal cushion when he hammered a pile-driver past the hapless goalkeeper in the 24th minute, before an own goal minutes later sealed the victory.
The next game produced a fascinating encounter between West Front Road and Cross Street of Werk-en-Rust as the two traded goals like heavyweight fighters, but the former stood firm to earn the win.
Michael Oie ensured that West Front Road made a positive start when he swept in from close range following a pass from Hubert Pedro in the 5th minute.
Cross Street fired back five minutes later through Sheldon Profitt, but Randolph Wagner’s strike in the 20th minute gave West Front Road the ascendancy again.
Oie returned three minutes later to add more comfort to his side, before Wagner gave them more to shout about when he scored to stretch their lead further until Dellon David netted seconds later to make things interesting.
Samuel Hunte’s strike just on the stroke of full time had the fans on their seat’s edge as West Front Road showed visible signs of panic as they quarreled with each other, but the sound of the final whistle shortly after brought a huge relief to them.
Former national striker Anthony Abrams showed why he is widely regarded as one of the best locally-based strikers when he lashed in a treble in quick time to secure a 3-1 win for his Bent Street unit in their clash against Hope Street of Tiger Bay.
Abrams netted in the 3rd, 6th and 14th minutes, while Ron Adams booted in the lone effort for Hope Street in the 22nd minute of play.
Action was set to resume last evening with six more matches at the same venue as teams try to position themselves high in the group standings for a place in the round of sixteen.
