Its appeal among communities is undeniably well-liked and this has made the request from the various neighborhoods overwhelming for Organiser Banks DIH, distributors of world famous Guinness.

This has forced the Company to respond in the affirmative to the request made by the Berbice community to stage the popular Guinness ‘Greatest of de Streets’ Competition in the Region.
Yesterday marked the launch of the inaugural tournament which will be held over three days at the New Amsterdam Stelling Tarmac commencing tonight.
Sixteen teams are confirmed to compete in the event which carries a first prize of $300,000, while second, third and fourth placed finishers will receive $150,000, $100,000 and $50,000 respectively.
Speaking at the occasion which was held in the Company’s Boardroom and had in attendance Berbice Co-ordinator Phillip Carrington, Communications Manager Troy Peters and Linden Co-ordinator Caeron Sealey, Guinness Brand Manager Lee Baptiste spoke of the flood of request from various communities to have the tournament hosted in their neighbourhood.
He said that the inaugural tournament to begin tonight in the Berbice area will see sixteen teams battle it out over three days with the top two finishers automatically qualifying for places in the national playoffs.
Baptiste added that Banks DIH is extremely pleased to have the tournament played in the community, citing strong support of the product from residents of the community. The Brand Manager promised the continued support of the Company for positive activities within the respective communities.
Carrington, a former national goalkeeper spoke of the eagerness of the players and fans to have the tournament hosted in the Region, adding that he is optimistic that the support will be overwhelming.
He then gave a synopsis of the tournament which will be played on a knockout basis on opening night and the surviving eight slated to be divided into two groups of four who will then play each other with the top four moving on to the semi-finals and final set for Sunday, at the same venue.
The teams that will be participating in the competition are: We and Them Boyz, Rosignol, Canje, Corriverton, Unruly Gang, East Bank Gunners, Fiesta Boyz, Courtland Blacksharks, New Amsterdam Kings, Manchester, Big Ballers, Courtland Stars, Lochaber Boyz, Spartans, Five Yard and Up Top Ballers.
Meanwhile, Banks DIH also took the opportunity to launch the Linden segment of the tournament with Baptiste stating that he expects a similar or even bigger turnout in comparison with previous years.
The tournament will see thirty-two teams battle for identical prize monies as Berbice, but will be played over six days starting from April 22 and ending on May 5 at the Linden Bus Park and New Silver City Hardcourt.
Sealey, who has been the Co-ordinator from the tournament’s inception in the community told the gathering that as soon as March comes around teams begin to enquire about the tournament, which according to him clearly demonstrates their enthusiasm in addition to the tournament’s growing popularity.
He stressed the importance of the competition which according to him brings both social and economic benefits to the Linden community. The tournament which is played during the Town Week celebrations is extremely popular among the residents and the turnout is large.
