The Guyana Mixed Martial Arts Karate Association took part in the Guyana Classic
of Classic Martial Arts Tournament at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall Sunday last. Master Lloyd Ramnarine took nine students from the Black Cobra Karate Club in La Parfait Harmony Phase 2 Westminister, West Bank, Demerara and eight were successful.
Alliyah Ramnarine toke part in the traditional kata form and got 1st place and Zafar Ramnarine 2nd, Mark Ramatar 3rd. Joshua Sooklall in the 8-10 category traditional kata form got 1st, Daniel Chandler, Philip Jaikissoon, Christopher Mahadeo got 4th place in the team kata and were also awarded medals. Shiloh Sydney got 1st in the 10-12 in kumite (sparring). In all they claimed 3 trophies and 5 medals.
Master Lloyd Ramnarine expressed satisfaction with their performance. The club is preparing for the next tournament on May, 31st when the Association stages their first inter club tourney in June and also exams in the same month and that will be followed by the rest of the month with several competitions.
The association has four branches; one in Great Diamond at the Community Centre, in Herstelling at the Nursery School, in Independent which is middle dam on the west side and Black Cobra Karate Club in La Parfait Harmony Phase 2 Westminister.
Master Ramnarine said karate is not there to promote violence, political or religious affiliation nor also of race or colour. Rather, it is all about discipline, self-control, self-defence and helps a person to be more focused and it will also be part of academics.
