Granddaughter of former Presidents Dr. Cheddi Jagan and Janet Jagan, Vrinda Jagan, is urging Guyanese, especially its youth population, to “look at all sides of the political race” in the upcoming May 11 Regional and General Elections.
Her views were expressed in a recent Facebook post on her personal profile encouraging young voters to become active participants in Guyana’s electoral process.
“If you can vote then do so. I wholeheartedly encourage the youth to get out there and be active, be the change, make a difference, fight for what you believe is right,” read Vrinda’s post. She further urged them to help promote social mobility, equality and peace in Guyana.
According to Vrinda’s post, she opted to write the statement after members of the community contacted her for advice and guidance in the face of impending national elections.
“I am honoured that anyone would seek my advice in a decision that requires serious personal thought and evaluation. I am fully aware that some people seek my perspective simply because of the inherent trust that comes along with bearing the name that I so proudly carry.”
She recalled her grandfather’s belief in a unified country undivided by race, religion or other barriers and to remember his continued fight in the face of adversity. The Jagans’ granddaughter went on to condemn the perpetuation of racism which continues to plague Guyana. In her post Vrinda also urged Guyanese to consider the interest of the working class when deciding which party will best serve their individual interests.
“I encourage everyone to look at all sides of the political race, do your research with due diligence, find out which candidate will better serve your interests and that of the working class (the majority class), and then decide which side you would rather see serve you,” stated Vrinda Jagan.
The US-based Jagan concluded her post by calling on Guyanese both at home and abroad to continue to work for racial and class unity in Guyana; “the vision that fueled my grandfather until he took his last breath”
