As preparations heighten for the Guyana/Grenada friendly international on Sunday March 29 at the Guyana
National Stadium, Providence, the Guyana Football Federation has announced that a Premier League record holder is among some stars expected to join forces with the Golden Jaguars for that game.
Matthew Briggs, the youngest player to ever feature in the Premier League, has committed to joining the Guyana National Team as they embark on the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers. Briggs, a left back who is currently on loan at Colchester United from Millwall, will fly to Guyana later this month to feature in the Grenada friendly on March 29.
Also joining will be Bolton Wanderers midfielder Neil Danns. Briggs made Premier League history in May 2007 when he represented Fulham against Middlesbrough at 16 years 65 days, a record that still stands.
Briggs represented England at the Under-19, 20 and 23 levels and now at age 24, has decided to play for Guyana. His grandmother is Guyanese and Briggs has been quoted as saying, “Playing for Guyana would be an honour.”
The 32 year-old Danns is a current member of Bolton Wanderes FC and has been very effective in the midfield having played some 35 games so far this season after moving from Leicester City.
Danns commented on his decision: “What attracted me to the set up was seeing the progress of the National team and ambition shown to me for the future. It is also a great opportunity to represent the country of my heritage and will allow me to gain further knowledge of my heritage and culture, which I know myself and
family will be proud of.”
Previously recruited from the Premier League ranks were brothers Carl and Leon Cort. With the addition of the latest duo from PL fame, Guyana’s 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Qualifying chances have been further boosted.
