Dear Editor,
Please permit me to highlight a situation which has, over time, become a burden to the taxpayers and in essence a way to rob citizens even further through perceived due process. The Guyana Power Light (GPL) has become a parasite instead of a proper service provider.
With millions being pumped into the agency there is no light at the end of the tunnel as consumers have to accept constant and abrupt darkness with mere petty excuses that has become the norm. But it appears that unless the head is removed, and department heads are made more accountable, we will not see any significant improvement to this utility monopoly.
Upon visiting the GPL Main Street branch, recently, to inquire about a pensioner being overbilled when no visit was made in almost a year to the premises, the excuse given was that the pensioner was being under billed, so I asked whose fault was that since GPL has to be reading a meter before billing persons which is in essence robbing them since I am sure many persons are also overbilled.
I was told that a complaint would be made to the meter reading department, and that was it! Now as a service provider with a poor track record there is need for a competing organization that may invest in a wind farm or some other form of green energy so that consumers may have an option.
A good example was when GT&T had the power to take advantage of citizens through the service they offered, suddenly when Digicel swept the market GT&T was force out of their dictatorial tendencies and prices were regulated to benefit consumers.
One relative of mine was shocked when also visiting the main street branch to inquire why he wasn’t receiving bills at the end of the month and he was told because he had accessed the (http://www.gplinc.net/billing/) to inquire the amount he had to pay, the power company automatically scratched him off the billing list since he could now have his bills read online and print a copy. According to the GPL this cannot be undone.
Now tell me something GPL this was never advertised in the media that this was the route that would be taken, and don’t tell me that my relative signed up for the billing service because he didn’t! He just checked the system and never registered an account!
These unscrupulous acts to further burden consumers with a responsibility that GPL is mandated with is nothing but disgraceful. Why should a taxpayer be forced to carry out the responsibility a service provider? Why should someone have to use their personal printer to benefit GPL when they are sucking the nation dry?
