The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) is calling on the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to ensure that a list completely void of discrepancies is prepared after the Claims and Objections period—which is set to commence February 9—concludes.
This call was made by General Secretary Clement Rohee on Monday, as he hosted the Party’s weekly press conference at Freedom House in Georgetown. He said that the claims and objections period will offer GECOM another opportunity to “further cleanse the list of underage persons and the dead.”
Rohee also called on the political opposition to “join in the advocacy for a clean and transparent list which will pave the way for free and fair elections in 2015.”
He then urged Guyanese to take the final opportunity to ensure they are properly and correctly listed. The General Secretary noted that the claims and objections period would allow for the change in particulars, and objections to persons not eligible to vote in 2015, among others.
Rohee said that the PPP remains optimistic that the Official List of Electors will present the nation with a chance to face an election that is free and without fear. He told media operatives that the PPP “time and again has expressed concerns over the recruitment of polling day staff and had requested public vetting of these individuals.”
The politician said that his Party’s request will serve to improve the confidence of the electorate in GECOM and “solidify its own integrity of elections management. It is important that the most suited persons, based on experience, qualifications and background, are employed to work on polling day.”
Rohee claimed that there were persons who acted biased and created problems in the 2011 and previous elections. He emphasised that they must be debarred from working at any other elections that are held in Guyana.
“The role of these individuals can never be over-emphasized in a smooth and transparent electoral process. Recruited persons tasked with upholding the democracy of our country must be made accountable to the Guyanese people,” said Rohee.
