Even the longest rope has an end. Asif Khan’s rope ran out yesterday when he was captured by police after eluding them for a little over three weeks.
Khan is said to be the driver who ran away after his car crashed into some pedestrians on the East Bank Public Road in the vicinity of the Princess Hotel, killing 18-year old Parmanand Deokaran and seriously wounding Davendra Mangal and Kayshawn Ramnarine.
The incident occurred on December 21.
Khan, a Bagotstown, EBD, resident reportedly fled the scene of the accident, leaving two passengers in his vehicle, which bears the registration number PRR 555.
The passengers revealed Khan’s identity to the police.
According to a police source, since the accident, they had searched a number of places, but came up empty handed.
The police had also questioned Khan’s wife but failed to obtain any vital information.
Khan was caught hiding in a house at Eccles by police who were acting on a tip off.
His capture comes a few days after the dead man’s mother, Jasmattie Deokaran, publicly pleaded with him to surrender.
She said that he was responsible for the mishap so he should face the consequences.
On Tuesday one of the injured persons, Kayshawn Ramnarine of Good Hope, East Coast Demerara also made a public appeal for Khan to give himself up.
Ramnarine’s father, Dharmendra Ramnarine, expressed satisfaction that Khan has been captured.
He told this newspaper that he was contacted yesterday morning by the police who informed him that the fugitive driver was in custody.
“I feel a relief, knowing that he will face the consequences. I was keeping contact with the police,” Dharmendra Ramnarine told this newspaper.
