Police are checking on a conversation 14-year-old Tiana Raghber had with an acquaintance shortly before her death in the hope that it leads them to her killer.
A police official told Kaieteur News yesterday that they are following leads related to this conversation and are also taking statements from individuals related to the case.
The official hinted that investigators have made some progress and expressed optimism that the schoolgirl’s killers will be apprehended.
Raghber, called ‘Tia,’ of Lot 32 Reliance Abandon, East Canje, Berbice, and a student of the Canje Secondary School, was found at around 13.55 hrs on Saturday, December 27, 2014, in a trench at Adelphi, East Canje Berbice.
A postmortem revealed that the 14-year-old was choked and dumped, while still alive, in the trench in which she was found.
Police appear to be leaving no stone unturned in their attempts to solve the case, with investigators even grilling the slain girl’s father and stepmother and impounding their vehicle.
This reportedly happened after police received conflicting reports about events leading up to the teen’s demise.
Reports that some villagers had threatened the victim’s father and his family had led police to detain four men, but they were subsequently released and police now appear to be looking at other suspects.
Raghber had reportedly disappeared around 21:45 hrs on Friday, December 26, last, after leaving her parents’ home without notifying anyone.
The girl’s father, Jaiprakash Raghber, had stated that the family, including Tiana, had gone to a gymkhana that day and had returned home around 20:00 hrs.
He stated that he had bought her two Stag beers.
They proceeded to watch television and Tiana later brought his meals upstairs and reportedly went to fetch him something to drink.
Mr. Raghber stated that when she did not return, he sent his 10-year-old son to call her, but the child came back and reported that she was not around. Tiana and her brother were scheduled to migrate with their grandparents.
