Residents of East Bank Berbice may soon get some relief from the nightmare they had to endure with the East Bank Berbice road which has been in a deplorable state for decades.
According to information a $393 million contract was awarded to H. Nauth and Sons for the rehabilitation of a section of the East Bank Berbice road, from Everton to Lighttown. Although the name of the Contractor was not mentioned, information out is that the contract was awarded to H. Nauth and Sons. The contract was awarded on Tuesday.
The awarding of the contract followed a number of controversies which erupted recently. Residents vented their dissatisfaction with the ongoing rehabilitation work being done in the area and the secrecy in which things were done. A number of stories were published in the Media as the residents continue to vent their frustration with the delays and the secrecy. They had blamed H. Nauth for their predicament.
This forced the company to issue a release denying any wrongdoing and giving a full explanation about the scope of work it had to undertake and the misconceptions being bandied about. The company said that it was being unfairly targeted and maligned for trying to help out in certain situations.
Although residents are happy that a contract has been awarded and that they may soon get some relief. They are disgusted with the secrecy with which things are being done. They expressed ignorance about the awarding of the contract and to whom it was awarded.
They still query why the back half was being done instead of the front. What criteria were used and why residents were not consulted before and their views sought.
H. Nauth and Sons which has an operation on East Bank Berbice, has been doing maintenance work on the road. However, within a short space of time the road would deteriorate. The company explained that doing maintenance work on the road was impossible from the start.
They took on the task and tried to repair the 25-mile stretch of what was left of the road. When certain sections were done other sections collapsed and so it went on and on.
Nauth had stated that on many occasion the company did more than what it was asked to do and more.
