Dear Editor,
The circumstances that have led to the calamitous abandonment of the recall of Parliament are as puzzling as they are distressing. How could grown men and women, politicians elected by the people claiming to have their best interest and country at heart, have allowed the situation to come to such a mess?
The damage caused by this latest catastrophe could prove irreparable for the country and no matter what happens now, we are convinced that there are torturous days ahead for the people.
We are of the opinion that when word first broke that the minority PPP government would delay the recall of Parliament, APNU, being the main opposition, should have proactively sought the support of the AFC and ask the Speaker to reconvene Parliament.
Instead, what the people saw and read were confusing statements from APNU. The leader of APNU claims that he would support the no confidence motion but his actions proved that is not true. He has not only called for local government elections, but is also protesting almost daily against the PPP for it. Some of APNU supporters are angry and disgruntled with such lack of focus and poor leadership.
If APNU is serious about supporting the no confidence motion then it should ask the Speaker to recall Parliament. It is our under-standing that the majority opposition has the authority to ask the speaker to reconvene Parliament.
There are indications that the people, including many APNU supporters, have stated in no uncertain terms that they have lost faith and trust in the leadership of APNU. They seem to believe that internal squabbling with the two elected officials at Linden, the shooting incident at its Congress in July and pettiness are destroying the party’s image.
They are no longer interested in APNU. In their eyes, APNU has become irrelevant.
Here was a situation that required creative and extraordinary leadership from APNU, but its leaders are now boxed into a corner, and many of its members are leaving in droves. As the situation now stands, APNU has seemingly lost an enormous amount of support, while the AFC may well be secretly smiling. Asquith Rose and Harish Singh.
