In his continued series of local football facts this week, Statistician Charwayne Walker asks; Did you know that the English Amateurs Football Association Team toured Guyana in July 1969 and thrashed the National Team a combined 16 – Nil in two Internationals?
Did you know that Guyana National Team lost 8 – Nil in the opening match at GCC Bourda against the English Amateur Football Team? The tourist arrived in Guyana after a Nil – all draw with Regional Champs Trinidad & Tobago in Port – of – Spain.
The Guyana goalkeeper that took the 8 goals was Christopher Harrison. In the series decider at the same venue Guyana replaced Harrison with Michael Hampden but the results was the same. The English Boys led by a hat-trick from Bobby Page demolished the National Team 8 – Nil; and according to football fans, the local bus fare at that time was 8 cents.
