Twenty-nine year-old Johnny Marosa, a Cuban national, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, and pleaded guilty to a count of conspiracy to commit a felony and another for uttering a forged document.
Guilty: Johnny Marosa
It is alleged that on October 3, last at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, with intent to defraud, he uttered to an Immigration Constable his Cuban passport #H126957 with a false employment visa.
Prosecutor Michael Grant stated that between August 1 and August 29, last, Marosa conspired with person or persons unknown to forge the Guyana Employment Visa.
The Cuban national is married with two children and currently resides at Lot 20 Dennis Street, Prashad Nagar, Georgetown. According to his lawyer, Paul Fung-a-Fat, he is an engineer by profession, and has travelled to Guyana before.
Fung-a-Fat told the Chief Magistrate that the defendant’s father is an entrepreneur and has a huge tract of land in Essequibo. The lawyer further noted that the man’s father legitimately conducts business in Guyana, where they smoke various meats such as hams and sausages.
With the help of an interpreter, the young man begged for the court’s leniency, stating that he only came to Guyana to work to assist his family. His Attorney also asked the Magistrate to take into consideration that his salary is “very low” and that he is very sorry. Fung-a-Fat promised that Marosa will go through the right avenues.
The Attorney requested a non-custodial sentence because he does not speak English. Marosa was fined $100,000, failing to pay which will result in six months’ imprisonment.
