Another gold miner working in the Mahdia district was buried alive when the walls of the 20-foot pit in which he was working caved in yesterday.
It took colleagues about three hours of digging to reach the body of 42-year-old Nolan Lindie, but by the time they were able to free his body from tonnes of rubble, it was too late.
Police in a press release stated that at about 10:30hours yesterday, Lindie, of Rosignol, West Bank Berbice, was working in a mining pit at Mahdia, Potaro, when the wall of the pit caved in on him.
He was later taken out and taken to the Mahdia Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Lindie, who has no children, had returned to mining about three weeks ago after a brief lull.
His brother, Stanley, who is working in the same area, told this newspaper via telephone that Lindie was working with four other men in the pit.
He said that from the reports he received, Lindie was the only one who was caught under the falling rubble.
“The landslide and cover he. He didn’t get a chance to move out. It tek dem about three hours fuh dig he out.”
Stanley described the land where Lindie was working as very treacherous.
“It li’l dangerous; is about 20 feet,” he said.
