Kellon Carmichael was the only batsman on either side to reach 50 on a treacherous Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) track which made batting an adventurous expedition over the weekend as Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) crushed the hosts by 10 wickets in the latest round of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Hadi’s two-day first division competition.
Left-arm spinner Raj Nanan, who took 5-10 and 8-29 for GCC; Leg-spinner Steven Sankar, who captured 8-91, utilized the pitch on which one ball bounced alarmingly and next kept low, to dominate the contest which ended yesterday just after lunch.
The 25-year-old Carmichael led from the front with an attacking unbeaten 73 with six sixes and five fours from 57balls and rallied MSC, following-on with a deficit of 117 runs, to 165 all out, four overs after Lunch.
Caribbean Champions League (CPL) selectee Robin Bacchus had Martin Bell-Pestano (5) as his silent partner as he plundered seven fours and a six in a pugnacious undefeated 41 as GCC set 49 to win, galloped to 50 without loss from just 8.2 overs under a cloudless sky in scorching heat.
MSC, who were asked to follow-on after being bowled out for 107 in reply to GCC’s 224, began their second innings yesterday and National opener Shemroy Barrington took the fight to the GCC bowlers, hitting four fours and a six in an explosive 33 from 25 balls to dominate the 53-run first wicket partnership with Floyd Rollins (10) before the 22-year-old Nanan had Barrington caught and bowled.
Former West Indies youth team Skipper and Guyana Amazon Warriors all-rounder Steven Jacobs (6) fell to Renaldo Ali Mohamed who also accounted for Rollins to start the ‘Raj Nanan demolition mission’ and slimly built spinner spun webs around the batsmen to capture all of the remaining wickets.
By Lunch Nanan had removed Racquel Green (3), Sankar, who clobbered two sixes and a four in a cameo 20 before he gave his wicket away with Carmichael well set at the other end, and Keffa Naughton (0) to leave Malteenoes on 151-7, with the Skipper on 59.
Carmichael who played an array audacious shots on the fast outfield, thumped Bacchus for a couple of back-to-back sixes before he watched in disbelief from the non-striker’s end as Nanan ploughed through the last four batsmen before any of them had scored. The last five wickets tumbled for just 14 runs.
Nanan captured his career best figures at first division level from 13 overs and finished with matches figures of 13- 39. He got support from Ali-Mohamed (2-23) to provide GCC, who has produced 14 Test players, the most by any Guyanese club, with an emphatic victory.
