Ogle Sports Club are the East Coast Cricket Board Elizabeth Styles 1st Division
champion after beating Lusignan in a thriller. Lusignan who won the toss and elected to bat in bright sunshine with an enormous crowd watching, started well with Brian Sattaur and Steve Ramdass opening the batting, reaching 51 without loss when Sattaur was brilliantly run out by Adhoya Joseph from fine leg for 26 (3 X 4s).
Somnauth Bharrat joined Ramdass and batted beautifully before he was caught by Chris Pattadin off the bowling of Andre Gomes for 54, blasting 5 sixes and 1 four. Vishnu Ramjeet opened his account with a massive six and began rotating the strike. Ramdass, who played a supporting roll, was eventually out caught for 36 (2 X 4s and 1 X 6). Leon Morgan’s arrival at the crease saw some explosive batting from Ramjeet who belted 6 sixes and 2 fours and was caught behind for a well played 64. Morgan fell shortly after for 26 (2 X 6s). Kumar Bishundyal and Shazim Ali came together, Bishundyal contributed only 2. Narvan Singh and Ali batted out the remaining overs ending with a total of 237 for 6. Bowling for Ogle Sports Club – Anand Persaud 3 – 48, Sahadeo Ramkellawan 1-35 and Andre Gomes 1 – 25 were the leading bowlers.
Chris Pattadin and Andre Gomes started positively for Ogle as the large and vocal crowd urged them on. Reaching 37 -0 in the 6th over then 50 – 0 in the 11th over the two batted stylishly, stroking the
ball to all parts of the field. Ogle reach 100 – 0 in the 19th over with Pattadin reaching a half century. Gomes suffered a minor injury and retired hurt at 41.
Azimul Haniff then joined Pattadin. Pattadin shortly after was out caught for 54 (3 X 6s, 1 X 4). Brian Sookram the next batsman, immediately blasted three sixes making 22 in 10 balls. Gomes resumed his innings and batted steadily as the game evolved into a thriller with 40 required from 32 balls.
Haniff was bowled for 45 (2 X 6s, 1 X 4), Khemraj Dindyal the new batsmen made 9. Tulsiram Balkarran came and was run out for nought. Anand Persaud contributed 5. Gomes was joined by Devindra Ramtahal. Requiring 9 from 12 balls, Gomes was dropped by Morgan at long on. Ogle eventually reached 238 – 6 in the 40th over; Andre Gomes making 88 with 6 sixes and 6 fours. Bowling for Lusignan – Gaganand Suknanand took 2 – 35, Narvan Singh 1 – 26 and Kumar Bishundyal 1 – 33.
Andre Gomes was declared Man of the match. President of the East Coast Cricket Board, Bissoondyal Singh, at the presentation ceremony, congratulated both teams for reaching the final and for playing good-competitive cricket. He also thanked the sponsor Elizabeth Styles of Port Washington, New York and Miami for their continued support for the game throughout Guyana. The Announcement that the company will be renewing the sponsorship was greeted with loud applause from the players and spectators.
