– Litter wardens appointed
In an attempt to tackle a prevailing litter problem, the Bartica Interim Management Committee (IMC) recently
commenced a massive clean-up campaign. And according to Public Relations and Media Officer attached to the IMC, Sherwyn Downer, the strategic move is one that will be sustained throughout the year.
Although the IMC falls under the purview of the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, Downer said, recently, that the initiative is one being completely funded by the IMC.
He explained that residents of Bartica have been forthcoming with their rates and taxes and therefore are benefiting simply because they have been honouring their obligations. “The residents in Bartica can be sure that they will receive value for money…this is a partnership and our aim is to ensure that we work with the people to make Bartica a better place,” said Downer in an invited comment to this publication.
He disclosed that the IMC regularly conducts cleanup work but noted that this time around the efforts are much bigger with a view of helping to encourage a culture change.
The Bartica area has for some time been plagued with a daunting litter problem and, according to Downer, the IMC has plans to do everything within its power to curb this situation.
The ongoing works include desilting drains, maintaining outfalls and kokers and cleaning the various avenues. The works will cater to Central Bartica and will span First Avenue to Seventh Avenue and from First Street to Ninth Street.
It is expected that the litter free ritual will be sustained, Downer said, with the aid of two litter wardens who will be dispatched by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment.
It is expected that the wardens will commence their operations with the IMC from tomorrow to lend their much needed support in helping to halt the litter problem.
