– Minister Ramsammy
– new board members to be announced soon
According to the Government Information Agency (GINA), Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy has said that the Guyana Sugar Corporation (Guysuco)’s second grinding season is off to a promising start and therefore the corporation should have no difficulties in meeting and even exceeding the 216,000 tonnes target for 2014.
GINA reported that at present the eight sugar estates and seven factories across the country are all operating, and that this represents a continuation of the good performance of the first grinding season.
Blairmont and Rosehall Canje estates have performed exceptionally well in this initial stage with workers earning extra days’ wages for production, the Agency reported.
According to GINA, Minister Ramsammy explained that in spite of some heavy rains in areas such as Skeldon, performance continues to be good up to this point and favourable weather is expected in the coming months.
With regards to GuySuCo’s board, the Minister said that Cabinet has approved the members identified and as per procedure, the formal announcement will be made by President Donald Ramotar.
He said that the Government has been awaiting final word from three individuals, one being Head of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU), Komal Chand, who has since declined the offer.
He explained that the executive of GAWU would prefer a nominee from that union to serve on the board; however, having been in the industry for some 40 years, Chand was the preferred candidate.
Meanwhile, one of the two other individuals has since verbally given his approval, which Cabinet has approved; while the other has requested more time to consider taking up the post.
Nevertheless, rather than waiting on the full complement of board members, the Ministry and Guysuco are moving ahead with the orientation process of the new members so as not to delay the work of the board and by extension slow down the operations of the corporation.
The new members are being engaged by GuySuCo to bring them up to speed with the industry’s status report (similar to what was presented to the Parliament’s Economic Services Committee).
As it stands, Guysuco has to generate a production of 138,000 tonnes in this second crop to meet the 216,000 tonnes 2014 target.
