The Ministry of Tourism has confirmed that Brooklyn based-Guyanese singer, Lisa Punch will be among the headline performers slated for this year’s Guyana Festival.
Punch, who was recently eliminated from ABC’s Rising Star Competition, is listed among a line of artistes scheduled to perform for the opening night of the festival.
The singer known locally by the nickname “Knockout Punch”, migrated to the United States last December. She has since launched a self titled debut album “The Evolution of Lisa Punch.”
The singer is also known for taking on different genres of music and making the songs her “own”, a number of original songs, which were written and recorded locally. She has performed at a number of national events in Guyana and Barbados.
The Tourism Ministry in a statement said, “The Guyana Festival team welcomes Ms. Punch on board and assures that the exhibitions, stage performances, sporting activities and all other components of the Guyana Festival will reflect the true ‘ Sound, Soul and Taste’ of Guyana,”.
Other energetic performers slated for the night, include Big Red, Rajesh Dubraj, Alabama, Kwasie Edmonson Jumo “Rubber Waist” Primo, Melissa “Vanilla” Roberts and First Born.
The artistes have since shared their views on the event and expressed their gratitude for being part of this inaugural festival. They were unanimous in their opinion that this concert would showcase Guyana and what the country has to offer, not only in music, but in culture and foods.
Tourism Minister (Ag) Irfaan Ali noted that the concert would be a very exciting one, filled with energy and enthusiasm.
“To bring a multifaceted group of people together will be exciting,” he said.
The Guyana Festival will be celebrated for three days, and will feature our most celebrated legends in sports, culture, art, music, food, entertainment and much more.
The event will also showcase a Night of Legends Concert which will feature renowned local artistes such as Yoruba Singers, Mighty Rebel, Dave Martins, Sammy Baksh, Terry Gajraj, Johnny Braff, Glenn Miller, Hilton Hemerding, and Winston Caesar.
Day one will feature a GDF air show national concert; Day two’s audience will experience the Night of the Legends and the thrilling Festival Cricket and Football matches; and Day three, will feature a National Cook Out with food from every culture, followed by the Generation Next Concert.
Visitors to the Guyana Festival slated for August 8 to 10, are in for another first time experience as Air Services Ltd will be offering helicopter rides.
Patrons will be able to have a bird’s eye view of the city from 12:00hrs to 18:00hrs each day during a 15-minute ride on the helicopter.
The fare is $9,000 per person with special discounts for families and school children.
A helipad has already been set up to the left of the main entrance and check-in facilities identified. The event is being held at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence.
