(Kaieteur News) – Radha Sukwah, the woman accused of killing her 73-year-old lover in 2018, was on Thursday freed of manslaughter after a jury returned a unanimous not guilty verdict at the Suddie High Court in Essequibo.
The verdict was delivered by Justice Fidela Corbin-Lincoln, with jurors finding that the prosecution’s case lacked sufficient evidence to support a conviction.
Sukwah, of Lot 363 Charity Housing Scheme, was charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of Deonarine, also known as “Russian.” It was alleged that on August 3, 2018, at Grant Maria’s Delight, Lower Pomeroon River, she unlawfully killed the elderly man.
During her initial court appearance before Magistrate Crystal Lambert at the Suddie Magistrates’ Court, Sukwah was granted $400,000 bail. Her attorney had informed the court that she is a single mother of four and was employed as a cleaner at the Charity Primary School.
In 2022, Sukwah was committed to stand trial at the Suddie High Court. Nearly four years later, following several court proceedings, she walked free on Thursday after being found not guilty.
Mikel Puran appeared as defence counsel for Sukwah, while the matter was specially prosecuted by Attorney-at-Law Bernard Da Silva.
Initial reports indicated that Deonarine was shot by a ‘masked man’ armed with a ‘long gun’ after responding to a call at his front door. A subsequent police release stated that Sukwah had grabbed a knife from the intruder and also held onto his firearm.
However, police later reported that Sukwah told investigators the shooting occurred accidentally during an argument. It was alleged that Deonarine sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen when he and Sukwah struggled over a shotgun he had picked up.
Following the fatal shooting, Sukwah was among four individuals detained by police for questioning. The three other detainees, who were employees of the deceased, were later released.
