Police on the East Coast of Demerara are investigating the torching of a car that belonged to well known Traffic Prosecutor, Sergeant Preston John, early yesterday morning.
The vehicle, a Toyota Raum, which was parked outside the policeman’s Bachelor’s Adventure, East Coast Demerara premises, was completely destroyed and investigators believe it was the work of arsonists.
Firefighters responded to the call that a car was on fire at around 01:30 hours and they responded within minutes, but by the time they arrived on the scene there was little they could do to save the vehicle.
John told this newspaper that he was not at home when the fire started. The car is normally parked in his yard, but John explained that since he had planned to use it early yesterday morning, he decided to park it on the parapet outside his yard sometime around eight o’clock the previous night.
“I just left it there and I mek a run out with my motorcycle, a short run …I come back like around two (o’clock) or so. When I come I see the fire tender outside my yard,” John told Kaieteur News.
At first he thought that the firefighters were attending to a house fire, but as he got closer to the scene, he realized that his car was the focus of their attention.
At the time only his son was at home, since his wife is holidaying in the United States of America.
John said that his son was deep asleep when the fire started and neighbours had to wake him up while the car was being consumed by flames. He is convinced that the destruction of his car was the work of arsonists.
“I was getting a overheating problem a few weeks ago but that can’t cause this, because I changed radiator and other parts only the other day,” the man explained.
John, who is attached to the Court Superintendent’s office at the Brickdam Police Station, acknowledged that being a Police Prosecutor could cause him a few enemies, but he does not believe that his work had anything to do with the destruction of his car.
He told this newspaper that when he acquired a minibus, he noticed some changes in the attitudes of some persons in his neighbourhood.
He also pointed to some issues he has had regarding a piece of land he recently fenced to rear some sheep.
John, however, said that he did not want to point fingers at any one person, since he will allow the police to conduct their investigations in a professional manner.
