National Coordinator, Dhanraj Singh, explained that the project commenced at Tapakuma almost over a year after consultation first began between the women of Tapakuma Mission, the Caribbean Economic Local Programme and RDC of Region Two.
This programme has been extended to a six-year programme for small farming initiatives throughout the Caribbean.
Singh said that an initial assessment was done to ascertain what was needed in the Tapakuma community in order to enhance Mechanization in that community. It led to the decision to provide a tractor to farmers to do large scale farming that eventually saw the implementation of the Women’s group.
With the acquisition of a US$42,000 tractor, the women’s group is expected to maximize production.
Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Norman Whittaker encouraged the beneficiaries to make good use of the equipment by optimizing and diversifying in the current production rate.
