Cuban man stages kidnapping to swindle father out of $1500
(Kaieteur News) – A Cuban’s man plan to swindle his father out of US$1,500 backfired after police found out that he had staged a kidnapping to get the money.
The Cuban national has been identified by police as 29-year-old Ivan Martinez. In a press-release, police stated that during its investigations inconsistencies were found in the man’s stories.
Kaieteur News learnt that Martinez cracked under pressure and reportedly told police that he staged the kidnapping.

Police reportedly received a report that Martinez was a victim of a kidnapping on Wednesday.
“Initial enquiries revealed that a 25-year-old Cuban national (Martinez friend) reported that the victim was allegedly being held against his will and that a demand for money was reportedly made for his release,” police said.
Kaieteur news understands that a photo of Martinez held at gunpoint in the back of what looked like a car was sent to his father in the United States of America (USA) demanding a ransom of US$1,500.
During its investigation, police trailed Marinez’s last movements and were able to obtain footage from security cameras at a hotel on North Road.
They traced his movements to Grove on the East Bank of Demerara and found him in a car with some other persons.
Police searched the vehicle and found an air pistol matching the description of the gun seen in the photograph sent to his father.
Three persons were arrested. Among them a Police Constable of Grove, East Bank Demerara (EBD), a 23-year-old Cuban national also of Grove and a 41-year-old taxi driver of Middle Road, La Penitence, Georgetown.
Three other persons were also detained for questioning, a 28-year-old mechanic of Grove, EBD, a 47-year-old driver and a 34-year-old Cuban national.
Two cars were impounded and several cellular phones confiscated. Police then interviewed Martinez about the sequence of events and when, inconsistencies were found in his story, police arrested him.
