A taxi driver accused of defrauding three sailors of over $500,000 in cash by posing as an agent capable of acquiring visas and medical certificates, has been remanded to prison.
Omali Kendall of Friendship, East Coast Demerara appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday and was indicted on three counts of fraud.
Police alleged Kendall obtained $220,000, $150,000 and $140,000 from Andrew McPherson, Trevor Dazzell and Trevor Paul respectively, claiming that he was in a position to acquire a visa and medical certificate enabling them to work on a cruise ship.
Kendall pleaded not guilty to the allegations.
The case was prosecuted by Inspector Michael Grant who did not reveal the details of the alleged fraud. He however, disclosed that the accused has a pending matter before the Cove and John Magistrates’ Court.
Grant said too, that investigators attached to the Criminal Investigations Division at the Brickdam Police Station are currently probing similar matters involving the accused.
The Chief Magistrate then remanded Kendall. She promised that if no further charges are brought on his next court date, she will consider bail.
The case is set to be called again on July 30.
