Teenager granted bail on theft charge
A 17-year-old labourer appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine- Beharry, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, charged with simple larceny.
The labourer, Jason Brotherson, pleaded not guilty on Thursday last. On June 12, at Meadow Bank, he allegedly stole a Samsung Galaxy S4 worth $160,000 from a woman.
His lawyer, Paul Fung-A-Fat, told the court of an intimate relationship between the youngster and the woman who filed the complaint. He explained that the woman’s husband is a gold miner in the interior, and she stays home when he is away on duty.
Fung-a-Fat noted that the man’s wife gave Brotherson the cell phone and frequently calls the young man to ‘come over’.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Bharat Mangru, said that Brotherson went to the woman’s Meadow Bank home for some water. Mangru stated that she agreed and went for the water, but on her return, noticed Brotherson escaping with her phone.
The prosector noted that she shouted for the labourer to return the phone, but the defendant fled the scene. Mangru said that a report was made and the defendant was arrested.
The prosecutor said that after the arrest, the defendant confessed to the theft. But the lawyer disagreed. He said that his client did not admit to any simple larceny.
The Chief Magistrate granted bail to the youth in the sum of $100, 000 and the matter was adjourned until August 4, next.
