The East Bank Berbice woman who was accused of brutalizing a young man who was in love with her daughter has
Deraj Singh, called ‘Vong’
been charged for her action.
The woman, Shurlin DeCunha, 44, of Brothers Village, East Bank Berbice, appeared in court on Friday, before Magistrate Shurdel Isaacs-Marcus in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s on the charge of unlawful wounding.
The mother of three allegedly beat Deraj Singh, called ‘Vong’, 18, of Lonsdale Village, East Bank Berbice on Sunday June 15, 2014.
DeCunha, who lives with her three children and her niece and her four children pleaded guilty. She asked to explain and was put on $30,000 bail. She will have to return to the Sisters Magistrate’s Court on July 15, next.
Prosecutor Sergeant Godfrey Playter informed the court that on the day in question the woman found Persaud in her yard and dealt him several lashes. The victim sustained injuries to various parts of his body.
The woman told investigators that on the day in question she returned from the Berbice River about 22:00 hours and found the defendant at her residence. She said that despite her many warnings to stay away the defendant still frequented her home.
She said that he was in her house and when he realized she had returned he tried to flee. He was captured and dealt several lashes about his body.
The man, who lived a few months in Trinidad, said he is familiar with the family. He stated that he would usually pass by the home where a 16 year old girl lived and she would call out to him. They soon struck up a relationship and they would text and call each other frequently.
She would invite him by her home to ‘gaff’ and watch movies and he would accept the invitation.
The girl’s mother and her family were against the relationship. DeCunha wanted her daughter to marry someone else.
