Regional councillors representing the various political parties got the opportunity to interface with heads of departments in Region Two, at a specially convened meeting, organized by the Region Two Administration, on Wednesday.
The venue was the Region Two boardroom.
Councillors representing the opposition parties, The Alliance For Change and A Partnership For National Unity, raised issues about the lack of drugs at the Suddie Public Hospital, drainage problems in the Region, and Sub-standard road works.
AFC councillor, Naith Ram questioned the lack of supply of drugs at the Suddie Public Hospital fueling another question in the attempt of finding out whether the Hospital was equipped with a bone specialist.
In response to his questions, Dr. Rama, a senior doctor assigned at the Suddie Public Hospital, explained that the hospital doesn’t have a short supply of drugs. However, drugs that are being supplied to the hospital sometimes would be sent to the Coast in an untimely manner.
Shanta Springer, a senior officer attached to the Suddie Public Hospital, said that the short supply of drugs to the Hospital has nothing to do with the Suddie Public Hospital. However, the fault lies with the Media Monitoring Unit.
The officer explained that in some cases all the drugs requested by the Hospital are not readily sent to the Hospital.
Rama, the bone specialist at Suddie, said that the Hospital was equipped with a bone specialist, but that specialist usually leaves about 16:00 hours.
People’s Progressive Party Regional Councillor, Mrs. Juliet Coonjah made reference to the alarming number of pupils who have not been attending school, especially at Maria’s Lodge, Essequibo Coast.
Coonjah said that children as young as 10 years old were not attending school; instead they were seen in the company of older boys smoking drugs.
The Regional councillor suggested to members of the Education Department that measures be implemented in order for Education officers to be gazetted. This would provide an opportunity to take to court parents whom she has described as neglectful and unconcerned.”We cannot be at rest; officers must be gazetted.”
APNU Regional Councillor, Linda Duncan spoke of young men loitering at a farmers’ wharf at Supenaam, gambling and engaging in smoking drugs.
In light of the continuous drainage problem experienced in the Region, Regional Vice Chairman Vishnu Samaroo said that an accretion cycle is being experienced at Somerset and Berks. This is causing heavy siltation.
Samaroo has said that the Region has a pontoon and an excavator to help clear the clogged up channels.
AFC Councillor, Naith Ram wants the region to install groynes along the sea shores but he was told that the government cannot afford this programme.
