A former city council worker who claimed that he was suddenly gripped by a bout of “sticky hands,” made several stirring apologies before he was sentenced to four months in prison yesterday.
Forty-three-year-old Damien James told Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry that while he was in former Postmaster General Stanton Haley’s yard in Roxanne Burnham Gardens, Georgetown, he noticed a spray can and was reminded of his stint as a city council worker and his hands “suddenly get sticky.”
James was charged for stealing Haley’s $20,000 spray can, $800 nozzle and $3,000 tool kit on April 9, last.
He entered a guilty plea and added “Your worship, I only took the spray can, not the other items. I went into the yard to see my aunt ‘cause I dislocated my hand and she is a nurse.”
“Now when I was in the yard I see the spray can and I remember when I used to work with city council and my hand get sticky and I pick it up. Then I hear somebody seh ‘somebody in the yard’ and I put the spray can on my back and jump over the fence.’”
“They catch me in the other yard with it. Your worship, before now, I spent one year in prison for stealing a bicycle.”
Continuing, James told the Chief Magistrate that he had not had a chance to apologize to the victim and moments later he turned to Haley and said “Boss man, I sorry right. Must please tell Miss Lady I sorry.”
“I ain’t mean to tek yuh thing. You’re a nice big man. I don’t thief from them your worship ‘cause they are nice to me.”
He was then sentenced.
