The Lions Club of Georgetown Stabroek yesterday distributed 250 plastic (bird) kites to less fortunate children within the Leopold Street community of Werk-En-Rust and at the Drop-in (orphanage) Centre for street children located on Hadfield Street.
The club, which is no stranger to doing service activities, makes it an annual feature to share kites during the Easter season to children who would otherwise not been able to fly kites.
According to the President of the Lions Club, Odessa De Barros, as a signatory project the club would usually receive donations and they would put the additional resources needed to purchase the kites for the children and distribute it on the Saturday before Easter. She explained that whatever kites they have remaining they would share it to children in Ketley Street, Charlestown.
The organization, in addition to the activities mentioned, usually does feeding programmes for the drop-in centre at Hadfield Street where they provide a hot meal or breakfast to the orphaned children living there.
“Besides that we usually give out spectacles, bursary awards, as well as health fairs, distribution of books etc., and all of that is a part of our service project” said the Club President.
“The Lions Club Georgetown Stabroek was chartered on the 4th of October 2002 and to date we have several charter members in the club and have undertaken numerous projects,” said one of the Club members. The project was spearheaded by the Club President and other members.
