The family of the late Bimchan Ramphal of Lot 63 No 19 village, East Coast Berbice is now breathing a sigh of relief.
Ramphal was killed on Saturday November 16, last year on the No.19 Public Road by a speeding car.
The driver, Deodat Ramnarine, 22, of Lot 11 No. 7 Village, East Coast Berbice and a student of the University of Guyana Berbice campus, was reportedly drunk at the time of the fatal accident. He is now facing two charges – Causing death by Dangerous Driving and Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol.
He appeared before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Reliance Magistrate’s court on Wednesday and pleaded not guilty to both charges. He was placed on $200,000 bail on the Causing Death charge and $10,000 on the Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol matter.
The case for the prosecution is that on the day in question, at about 18:00hrs Ramnarine was reportedly driving a Toyota Premio PNN 8167 at a fast rate on the No.19 Public Road. He allegedly lost control and ended up on the opposite side of the road and killed Ramphal who was walking with another man.
The pedestrians were reportedly on their way home when the speeding car suddenly swerved across the road and hit them. Ramphal was hurled over a trench and ended up in a yard. He was picked up and taken to the New Amsterdam hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police had stated that the driver was seriously injured and was also taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital, before being referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital and a Private Hospital in Berbice. His blood alcohol level was also tested and found to be over the prescribed limit. A file was subsequently prepared and sent to the DPP for advice.
According to Ramphal’s relatives, he was the sole bread winner in his family and did more than one job to make ends meet. Ramphal is survived by his wife and four children, aged 17, 16, 13 and 10.
The matter will be called again on April 11, next, in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court.
