An unemployed East Ruimveldt teenager who was nabbed by police ranks while cruising on the city streets with a motorcycle he allegedly stole was yesterday brought before the city court and arraigned on armed robbery and burglary charges.
Nineteen-year-old Anferny Cantzlaar, also known as “Space Head,” is now facing charges for break and enter and larceny as well as robbery under arms after he was arrested by police ranks and fingered by victims during an identification parade.
State Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant told the court that on February 9, last about 17:15 hours, Hamzie Baksh was attacked by Cantzlaar when he (Baksh) stopped at the traffic lights on Mandela Avenue in Alexander Village.
Grant explained that the accused approached Baksh and placed a cutlass to his neck and relieved him of $6000, his silver chain and BlackBerry cellular phone before making off with the victim’s BMX bicycle.
It is alleged too that between last Wednesday and Thursday (March 19 and 20), Cantzlaar broke into the home of Rocklin Morgan in East La Penitence and made off with her $180,000 Jailing motorcycle and $40,000 BlackBerry cellular phone.
The Prosecutor noted that the woman had secured her home before retiring to bed leaving the items intact, but when she woke up the next morning she noticed the articles missing.
Upon checking, she noticed her back door had been wrenched open and reported the matter to the police.
The Prosecutor said that acting on information received they managed to apprehend the accused and retrieve the motorcycle.
Charges were instituted against him after he was fingered by the victims in an identification parade. Inspector Grant offered several objections to bail. He said that because Cantzlaar is currently facing two charges he should be ordered held.
Grant told the court that Cantzlaar was previously charged for break and enter and larceny and urged the court to consider the serious nature and prevalence of the offences as sufficient grounds to deny him bail.
The Prosecution added that more charges are pending for him since the police are currently in possession of statements which implicate the defendant in other robbery matters.
Bail was refused and Cantzlaar is scheduled to return to court on April 11.
