It appears that the Guyana Police Force is sparing no one in its ongoing campaign to remove tint from motor vehicles.
Last Wednesday, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Member of Parliament Christopher Jones was forced to remove tint from his motor vehicle windows after being accosted by ranks of the Tactical Service Unit (TSU).
According to Jones, his contention is not that he had to remove the tint but rather, the rude manner in which he and his family were treated by the ranks which stopped him at Sheriff and William Streets, Campbellville
He recalled that three armed TSU ranks approached his vehicle and ordered him to step out. He complied with the orders but was taken aback by the question that followed.
Jones claimed that one of the ranks rudely asked what weapons he had in his vehicle, suggesting that he was into something illegal. The Member of Parliament said he answered in the negative while looking at his wife and two children who were with him in the vehicle.
Jones added that the ranks said that they will not search the vehicle because of the occupants. However, the man said he encouraged the ranks to execute their duties since the episode was becoming a spectacle. Though Jones does not have a permit from the Ministry of Home Affairs as yet for the tint he said he showed the police ranks the vehicle pass provided by Parliament. That was not effective.
The ranks eventually ordered Jones to take his car to the Eve Leary Police Station and remove the tint from his vehicle. Jones said he explained to the ranks that he was taken to Eve Leary Police Station recently concerning the same issue and had assured an officer that he would have gotten a permit for the tint.
Jones said he further informed the ranks that he is in the process of filling the application form but stressed that the tint on his vehicle is from the manufacturer and as such he is seeking an audience with Home Affairs Minister, Clement Rohee at the next sitting of Parliament.
Relating the incident, Jones said that with guns still drawn and a buildup of traffic at the traffic lights, a businessman who operates in the vicinity approached the ranks and tried to convince them to let the matter go since Jones is a Member of Parliament and by no means a criminal element.
Jones said to avoid a bigger scene he took his vehicle to Eve Leary. There he was forced to remove the tint from his vehicle and was placed on $10,000 bail. The Member of Parliament said he was unaware he was under arrest and to make matters worse, had no money on his person at the time.
Having explained his situation, Jones was forced to ride in the back of a police vehicle to Brickdam Police Station. He was placed on the bench and then taken back to Eve Leary where he was reunited with his family. Before leaving, he was told that he has to appear in court.
