DEAR EDITOR,
I read with some concern the recent statements advocating the conversion of some sugar lands into aquaculture farms, which I have no doubt can be a feasible business venture on our low coastlands.
My point is that Guyana has millions of acres of coastlands, a lot of which is undeveloped and surely it would be better to initially demonstrate the financial feasibility of aquaculture farming on some of these prior to converting GuySuCo’s developed sugar production lands, which only occupy approximately 100,000 acres.
The low sugar production can be dealt with if there is the will to do so. That is another matter, which should not be translated into calls for conversion of sugar lands.
Incidentally, a writer asked the question, some months ago, why was the Skeldon factory producing brown or unrefined sugar, while the original design was for a white or refined sugar factory. Can someone say why the design was changed? It would be helpful to get an answer. Concerned stakeholder
