– lucrative road race on this morning
Guyana’s best distance athletes face their biggest challenge in road racing this morning when the much-anticipated Wartsila 20km Road Race Classic gets underway from 6:00am from Paradise East Coast Demerara to finish at Wartsila Headquarters, upper Water Street Kingston.
Guyana’s most recognised names in distance-running in the Caribbean, Trinidad and Tobago-based, Lionel D’Andrade and Kelvin Johnson competed in the race this morning along with the country’s distance King, Cleveland Forde.
Also among the men were Dennis Horatio, Cleveland Thomas and Nathaniel Giddings among an interesting line-up of other athletes looking to secure the $300,000 first place purse that is up for grabs in the first major 20km race in Guyana in the New Millennium.
The Women’s race is set to be a humdinger as well with the Caribbean’s leading distance runner, Trinidad and Tobago’s Tonya Nero arriving in Guyana yesterday morning to take on the United States-based, Euleen Josiah-Tanner and local, Alika Morgan.
The female race also fetched the prize tag of $300,000. The total monetary prizes amounts to the sum of $3.3M, which is a historic amount for local road races. Prizes will also be awarded in five other competitive categories including Juniors, Youth and Masters.
The overall winner in the Open Male category will pocket $300,000 while second through sixth takes home $240,000, $200,000, $140,000, $100,000 and $50,000 respectively. The same prizes will be awarded in the Open Female category of the race.
Race Route: the race will start in Paradise; proceed west along the East Coast Public Road and continue onto Kitty Public Road, into CARIFESTA Avenue, north onto Upper Camp road, west into Battery Road, south onto upper Water Street to finish in front of Wartsila Headquarters.
