Joshua Hubbard was an eight-year-old vibrant child whose life ended on February 15, last, hours after he was reportedly pushed off the school’s step by one of his schoolmates.
Hubbard, who attended St. Margaret’s Primary School, died from internal bleeding in the brain around 01:00am on that fateful day. This was hours after he told his mother, Roxanne Hubbard, that a school mate pushed him down the school’s step.
Reports are that little Hubbard, who on several occasions had complained to his class teacher about a “bully” who was after him, purchased a rose with his pocket money, to give his mother for her Valentine’s Day, when he was confronted by the bully at school.
When the child refused to give his rose to the other student, an argument escalated and the eight-year-old child was pushed off the school’s step. Joshua, who was not visibly injured, then went home, wished his mother a happy Valentine’s Day and reported what transpired at school to her.
Hours after Joshua went to bed, he was heard crying out for pain and was rushed to a private hospital where he eventually succumbed.
Joshua, his family recalled at their Kitty home yesterday, was a fun loving, generous child whose strange laughter could light up a room. The child’s mother told Kaieteur News that he did not deserve to die the way he did.
The mother recalled that when he rushed upstairs the day he went home after school (February 14, last) and handed her the rose.
“I didn’t take it serious because he did not complain for any pain. When he came home he was playing in the yard and then he bathe and brush his teeth and went to bed but he was tossing, tossing so I prayed for him and he come back normal and then a little after he started to cry out for pain, that was the first time I heard my son cried out like that, so right away we rushed him to the hospital but he died shortly after,” the mother recalled.
The woman further added that ever since her son passed away, she did not get any justice from the school as well as the Ministry of Health.
“I had a very short meeting with the Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand and she promised to call me back but up to now no one has called me,” Joshua’s father, Orin Hubbard stressed.
He added that he and his wife visited the school numerous times and provided the headmistress with the name of the child who reportedly pushed their son to his death but nothing was done.
“We just want to know what happened exactly. We identified the child who did it but it seems as if the teachers are covering up everything,” the parents opined.
Kaieteur News tried to contact the school yesterday for a comment but was told that the head teacher was not available.
