NCN commits to sponsoring broadcast for one night of int’l amateur boxing tourney
After a lengthy period, international amateur boxing returns to the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) February 14-16 as the action pits the skill of local pugilists against their counterparts from Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and St Lucia.

National Communication Network (NCN) has committed to sponsoring the broadcast for the opening night of the tournament. Live commentary will be carried from 9:00pm on NCN Radio and fans can tune in to follow the action as it unfolds.
President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), Steve Ninvalle, said this is a big boost for the sport. Ninvalle said he and the association were elated at this development and it is reminiscent of the days when amateur boxing was carried live on radio which led to large crowds coming out to witness the sport. He recalled veteran broadcasters BL Crombie, Stanley Moore and Brent Chapman calling the action as fans tuned in around the country.
The respective boxing teams are due in the country in the coming days and fans are promised fireworks as the young boxers seek to make their respective countries proud.
The local reps are Bert Braithwaite, Eon Bancroft and Ron Smith (welterweights), Trevon King and Dennis Thomas (middleweight), Michael April, Stephon Nedd and Junior Henry (52kgs), Delon Charles (56kgs), Imran Khan and Clairmonte Gibson (60kgs) while the two females are Dwon Thompson and Theresa London, both tipping the scales at 75kgs.
The local team is engaged in roadwork exercises at the National Park at 05:00hrs and then returns for gym sessions at the Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG) at 16:00hrs daily. The squad is going through its drills under the keen scrutiny of Terrence Poole, Sebert Blake, Wensel Thomas and Cuban coach, Francisco Hernandez Roldon.
