The Government Technical Institute (GTI) is in the process of implementing its Waste Separation Initiative. This is being done in partnership with the Quality Assurance Committee and Science Department of the Institute.
The aim of the project is to enhance the environs of the institute and create a safe and conducive teaching and learning atmosphere for the staff and visitors. This initiative entails separation of aluminum cans and
plastic bottles using a colour-coded system. This would mean that red garbage receptacles would contain aluminum cans, while the blue ones would be used for plastic bottles.
And after the various types of waste are separated, all will be transported to the University of Guyana to be recycled. This would be as part of another collaboration; this time with the Faculty of Technology – Recycling Group of the University.
It was explained during the launching of the campaign yesterday, that prior to the implementation of the ‘Waste Separation Initiative’, there were activities held to spread awareness.
To this end, an Awareness Conference was held and attended by mostly staffers and students of the Technical Institute. The aim of the forum was to fully sensitize students and staff about the initiative, prior to its implementation, in order to prevent the misuse of the receptacles and ensure that there is full understanding of the institution’s new disposal procedure.
To this end, several other activities were also proposed. These include Inter-departmental debating competitions, an Environmental March in the community, and an Inter-departmental quiz competition. This is to also ensure that persons are well educated and informed about the importance and benefits of practicing recycling.
This programme would also mean that GTI has moved one step closer toward becoming an environmental friendly institution.
It is in this light, that the institute is aiming to steer its staff and trainees toward becoming well-rounded and environmentally-conscious members of society.
In addition, this newspaper understands that these are the first of many other activities planned to help foster the ideal atmosphere of the institution.
The Administration is also encouraging other schools to adapt this initiative and create the awareness and culture of a clean school, and ultimately a clean society.
