The New Amsterdam Town Week 2013 was declared open by Mayor Claude Henry on Sunday before a large gathering on the lawns of State House.
The launch was preceded by a march around and culminating at State House.
Town Week is being celebrated under the theme: ‘Embracing our diversity; uplifting our community’. The New Amsterdam Mayor and Town Council (M&TC) under Mayor Claude Henry is promising a Town Week “with a difference.”
Coordinator of the week of activities, Ms. Jennifer Conway, stated that it opened with a ceremony on State House Lawns. There was a Boxing Exhibition at the All Saint’s Presbyterian School ground; followed by cricket and football under floodlights. Impromptu speeches, variety concerts as well as a domino competition will also take place during the special week.
The activities will culminate with the Grand Street Fair and Exhibition which will be held along Main Street on Saturday. “We are hoping to have lots of exhibits from in and around New Amsterdam,” she said.
Conway stated that as opposed to previous years, the planning committee does not wish for the street fair aspect to be in the form of a “bubble session with dancing”. Rather there will be exhibits “because I know New Amsterdamers produce lots of items and they are multi-talented. Persons can make their pickles, handiwork, jams and jellies—we are encouraging all persons to come on board and exhibit what they have.”
This, she stated, will result in financial gains for those exhibitors, since visitors to the Town Day will want to purchase those items.
The proceeds garnered form hosting the Town Week will go towards the beautification of the Stanleytown Cemetery, Berbice main cemetery.
“The idea was mooted by the Heads of Department, who thought that the Town, under the patronage of the Mayor, should make another contribution for the benefit of the citizens of the town…That would include the construction of concrete bridges and clearing of the overgrowth in there.
“We are asking all of New Amsterdam and its environs to come and support that, so we will have enough funds to give the cemetery that enhancement.”
Region Six Chairman, David Armogan, praised the event designed “to mark our pride and heritage and to carry a message outside our community that we in New Amsterdam are very proud of what we are and have a lot to celebrate.”
Town Week, he added, gives the town an opportunity “to showcase our talent and our towns and allows our businesses to make a few dollars during this week where people will be coming to our town and spending money.”
Mayor Henry reminded the gathering that New Amsterdam is one of Guyana’s oldest Municipalities. It became a town in 1991.
