The Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) of Farm East Bank Demerara is currently counting its losses after strong winds destroyed the roofs of two buildings and a pavilion housed in its compound.
About 14:30 hours yesterday, during heavy rainfall and flashes of lightning, sections of the community’s NDC building roof were blown off. Zinc sheets from the Community Centre were not spared.
However, the nearby pavilion sustained most of the damage as its entire roof was blown off and its frame partially torn down.
Incidentally, no damage was done to the Providence Nursery School building which is also housed in the compound.
Kaieteur News was told that at the time, the compound was undergoing rehabilitative works, including repairs to the pavilion. Luckily, the workers present in the compound escaped unharmed.
Arjune Mohan, the contractor in charge of the repairs informed that he had just finished “pressure washing” the pavilion and was making preparations to start painting it when the rain began.
“The rain started to fall and lightning started to flash, so we decide to go in the building (NDC) to hide. And when we go in, a few seconds after I start hear some noise. When we look through the window, we see zinc flying all over the place,” Mohan recounted.
It was observed that the strong winds not only resulted in damages to the buildings and the pavilion, but high power cables were torn down from their posts, resulting in power outages to a number of residents on the southern end of neighbouring Herstelling.
Kaieteur News observed that the fallen power cables even landed in a nearby trench, causing serious concern among residents. “That power line got 11,000 Volts. We call GPL emergency and them ain’t arrive yet,” one resident voiced while pointing out a section of the high powered cable that fell.
While unable to state the definitive steps that will be taken to address the immediate damages, Chairman Peter Abai informed that the Councilors are seeking advice from the relevant authorities as it is the first time that the NDC is encountering such a situation.
He said that currently, the Council will be working to clear the damaged zinc sheets and wood from the area so as to ensure safety for the Providence Nursery School students who will return to school tomorrow. He said that the contractor advised that the entire pavilion be pulled down for fear it will fall.
The Chairman estimated that losses are probably to be calculated in the millions of dollars, as some of the government-funded rehabilitative works were already completed.
