Another upset was recorded on Friday night in this year’s Trophy Stall Regulation Open Basketball championship as the previously winless sixth ranked Wismar Pistons inflicted a ten point (58-48) defeat on the number two seed Amelia’s Ward Jets.
This was the Jets’ second loss which makes their quest for a final four berth among the seven contesting clubs more interesting.
In the evenings other clash, Half Mile Bulls put out Block 22 Flames with a comfortable 69-43 victory.
The Jets, who still lead the points’ race with eight after playing five games, were set to play their final game last night and seemed certain to qualify should they beat their arch rivals and defending champions Kashif and Shanghai Kings, who have suffered two losses after three games.
The Pistons now have a win and three defeats for five points while the Bulls and Flames are on six points, one behind Retrieve Raiders. They along with Bankers Trust Falcons are bracketed on six points after winning two and losing two from four of their six match schedule in this seven team race.
The Jets took off first and led 13-10 and 27-23 after the first and second quarters of play but found themselves in a tight game as the Pistons fired on all cylinders and took control midway into the third period leading 39-27 at one stage.
They stopped the Jets from propelling when they went on a 16-0 run; before concluding the third period to finish ahead by ten, 46-36. From this third quarter onslaught the Jets’ wings were broken as the veteran former national centre Robert Byass entered the fray for the Pistons turning back the hands of time as he helped his side gain their first win.
With 4:20 to go, Pistons were leading 52-42, and as their leading scorers – shooting guard Mark Louis and power forward Dwight ‘Crab’ Cooper challenged everything, the Pistons were not to be denied that important win.
With just 1:57 remaining, the Pistons had the game wrapped up and eventually won 58-48 behind solid scores from Cooper with 17, Louis 15 and Allister Bynoe 10. Again the top shoot for the Jets were national centre Shane Webster who netted 14 points, big brother Allister 13 and Rodwell Pellew who added eight for the losing Jets side.
In the other game the young Half Mile Bulls were too strong for the Flames who went down 69-43 after the Bulls had taken the lead 16-2, 35-12 and 44-27 in a dominant display that ended eventually 69-43.
MVP and Top Scorer of this year’s LABA Under-19 Schools championship, shooting guard Terron Welch shot home a game high 18 points with Keon ‘Buckter’ Cameron 17, Kevin Easton 11 and Jamar Bethune nine were the standouts for the Bulls who have won two and lost two with two games still to play for six points, a record which is similar to the Flames and Amelia’s Ward Falcons.
Only Devon Morrison with nine and Selwyn Noble eight offered any resistance to the Bulls’ running game.
The championship continues on Wednesday with one game, a replay of a rained out game between Kashif and Shanghai Kings and Half Mile Bulls.
Friday will see Block 22 Flames take on Amelia’s Ward Falcons in the opening encounter with the other between Retrieve Raiders and Kashif and Shanghai Kings. Round-robin play will wrap up on Saturday when Raiders takes on Flames and Pistons challenge Bulls.
