– double header to kick things off in Linden tomorrow
The evident absence of the pomp and ceremony that is typically associated with the launch of a major event was quickly overshadowed by the enthusiasm and harmony displayed by member associations’ representatives, players, officials and more importantly representatives of the sponsor.
President of the GFF Christopher Matthias (3rd left) and Banks Beer Brand Manager Brian Choo-Hen (3rd right) pose with the winning trophy in the presence of GFF and Banks DIH officials yesterday.
Yesterday, in the lobby of the Banks DIH Sports Bar at Thirst Park, the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) / Banks Beer 2013/14 National Premier League was launched before a large turnout that included GFF President Christopher Matthias, Vice-President of Competitions Collie Hercules, Banks Beer Brand Manager Brian Choo-Hen, Company PRO Troy Peters, GFF Vice-President Ivan Persaud, players and associations representatives from the sixteen (16) clubs selected to participate in the event.
Peters, who chaired the proceedings shortly after apologising for the absence of Deputy Chairman George McDonald, referred to the occasion as another significant day for Guyana’s football which heralds one of the biggest tournaments to be played.
He expressed thanks on behalf of the Chairman Clifford Reis, Board of Directors of the Company and the Staff and Management for allowing the Company to be associated with the League.
Hercules, whose responsibility it is to run the League first acknowledged the job done by the Organising Committee who according to him worked tirelessly to produce the Plan that will govern the League, while emphasising its importance in shaping the future of Guyana’s football.
He cautioned the clubs that there will be winners and losers in every game and that he believed will challenge teams to be creative and take more risks. Hercules encouraged the teams to be disciplined, play hard and help develop a brand of football that will be pleasing to the fans.
Matthias in his remarks spoke of the objectives that the GFF would like to achieve through the staging of the League and urged teams to adhere to the rules that have been set up to govern the event.
Choo-Hen for his part welcomed all those present and echoed the earlier sentiments expressed by Peters, adding that the Company will remain steadfast in their commitment to assist in the development of the sport.
He called on the community of Linden, the location for tomorrow’s double header to come out and support the initiative which according to him will certainly reinvigorate interest in the sport once again.
Teams were later presented with the rules and fixtures that will govern the League. Close to $7million in prize monies and trophies will be up for grabs while there will be incentives for individual outstanding performances as well.
The winning team will receive $3million, runner-up $2million, 3rd place $1million and 4th place $500,000.
Also, there will be a daily gate prize of $25,000 for a lucky fan along with other special prizes.
