The alleged gunman behind the killing of Tucville resident Sheldon Cheddie did not know his victim personally, and investigators therefore believe that someone hired him to commit the execution-style hit.
A source said that police are hoping to question the suspect further to find out who hired him and the motive for the killing.
This newspaper was told that the injured suspect, identified as Omal Williams, of Berbice, is still hospitalised. Detectives have already swabbed his hands for possible traces of gunpowder residue. Results of those tests may be known today.
Kaieteur News understands that police who scoured the scene failed to find any spent shells or warheads and no firearm was recovered from the suspect.
Cheddie, also known as “DJ Cheddie,” of 39-949 Jackson Street, Tucville, was shot at least seven times at around 20:30 hrs last Monday by one of two men who rode up to him on bicycles.
An eyewitness told Kaieteur News that Cheddie and several of his friends were sitting under a tent near the Tucville area known as Turning Point when the two men approached.
There was no exchange of words and one of the two men walked up to Cheddie and shot him at least seven times. The two, according to eyewitnesses, quickly rode away. However, while some of Cheddie’s friends rushed him to hospital, others pursued the alleged shooters.
They managed to apprehend one of the men, who was later identified as Williams, in East La Penitence, and inflicted a beating on him.
