Guyana dominated the Digicel Senior Caribbean Squash championships which concluded last evening at the Georgetown Club by winning both the Women’s and Men’s titles.
The hosts proved too good for Barbados winning 4-1 in the female category, while the men’s team overcame the Jamaicans by a similar margin in the final round matches of the tournament which was powered by Powerade and Smalta.
Nicolette Fernandes led the Guyana victory charge by defeating Karen Meakins in three straight sets 11-5, 11-2, 11-7 while her team mate Ashley Khalil powered to a 11-8,11-3,11-6 win over Alex Jordan. Mary Fund-A-Fat extended the locals advantage by hammering Gylla Mackenzie 11-7,11-6,11-7. Nadia McCarthy gave the Bajans hope by beating Ashley De Groot 11-4,9-11,8-11,11-3,11-7, but Keisha Jeffery ensured Guyana won the Women’s title for the first time by hammering Amanda Haywood 11-5,11-6,11-8.
Richard Chin got the home team off to a bright start against the Jamaicans in the Men’s division by trouncing Bruce Burrowes 11-3,11-9,9-11,11-2. Jason Ray Khalail (GUY) routed Bruce Levy 11-5,11-5,11-9 before Jamal Calendar (GUY) took care of Julian Morrison 11-8,11-9,11-7.
Alex Arjoon then put the locals on course by coming from one set down to beat Dane Schwier 3-11,11-7,11-5-11-6.
Chris Binnie (JAM) gave the Jamaicans some consolation by winning his game against Sunil Seth 9-11,11-6,11-1,11-6.
In other final round games in the Men’s category; Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) drew with Trinidad and Tobago 2-2, while Cayman Islands beat Barbados 3-2.
Kevin Bailey (OECS) beat Nku Patrick (T and T) 11-3,5-11,7-11 11-7,11-6, while Chase Mc Quan (T&T) overcame Dion Ansen (OECS) 11-8,11-4,11-9. Kevin Hannaway (OECS) defeated Don Lee (T&T) 11-5,11-9,11-8 and Kale Wilson (T and T) got the better of Jules Suagg (OECS) 11-5,11-8,11-5.
Mark Chaloner (Cayman Islds) beat Gavin Cumberbatch (BAR) 11-3,11-4,11-4, Shawn Simpson (BAR) defeated Cameron Stafford (Cayman Islds) 11-6,11-6,11-5. Stewart St. John (BAR) triumphed over Daniel Murphy (Cayman Islds) 8-11,11-6,11-7,8-11,12-10.
Julina Jerris (Cayman Islds) routed Zaki Williams (BAR) 11-1,11-4,1-7; Gabby Rabess (Cayman Islds) beat Rheth Cumberbatch (BAR) 6-11,11-9,11-8,9-11,12-10.
Barbados grabbed the veterans’ title while Guyana took the runner up spot and OECS ended in third position.
