Dear Editor,
When I wrote that M Maxwell had written that four WPA members had been killed “before the internationally known Walter Rodney” I was wrong, The number M. Maxwell used was three, including the supposed Claude Bovell, before Walter Rodney. I quoted M Maxwell correctly in the next paragraph of my letter and I apologise to the writer for giving a wrong impression.
I did not accuse M. Maxwell of exaggeration and I do not believe that the writer had such a motive. The state-owned press, then, as now, was full of mischief and deception and was also without equal competition in those years.
My point is that relying on what appeared in the newspaper in those days is a risk. Yesterday (Tuesday) I followed up and was able to establish that the name “Bovell” did not come from Ohene’s parents or grandparents, and that it was never his name.
For some reason the political system in those days twice played with the identity of its political victims. They had pretended not to know who Dr Rodney was. Eusi Kwayana
