Schools participating in the 2013 Digicel Nationwide Football Championship continue to benefit from the new insertion made to the event by the sponsor which is to expose students to the dangers of marijuana, alcohol and tobacco use.
The Company has retained the services of an organisation called ‘Social Life Issues’ a non-governmental entity to lecture on the three topics with the aim of educating the students about the negative consequences of their use.
Yesterday, Resource Personnel Michael Hollis Roberts journeyed
to Lethem in Region Nine to meet with the students who’re participating in the championship where he conducted a one-hour session on the three topics giving details about the consequences of using them.
Hollis Roberts, who openly confessed that he was talking after having first-hand experience of using all three substances, initially spoke on the effects of using marijuana.
He told the students from Aishalton, Annai and St. Ignatius that the journey of marijuana use is similar to making the first step on a long ride, informing that that first step could be the beginning of a life of drug use that could also end up destroying one’s life in many ways.
Among the effects of using marijuana he said are imprisonment, impotency, addiction and sickness. On the subject of alcohol, Hollis Roberts again highlighted the harm from using the substance which he said could be a broken family, memory impairment, blurred vision, liver disease and could also lead to addiction.
In terms of tobacco use, Hollis Roberts revealed some of the harmful chemicals that could be found in the plant which include tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide, all damaging agents to the body.
According to him, tobacco use is detrimental to the heart, lung, mouth and the body in general so he strongly advised against its use.
Digicel Customer Relatiions Manager Sherwyn Osborne in his remarks thanked the students for coming out to participate in the informative session and urged that they listen keenly and desist from using the mentioned substances.
The students also interacted by asking questions about the effects of their use and what could be done to eradicate their use or simply reduce their intake. Also in attendance at the occasion was Region Nine Co-ordinator Megan Thomas, who introduced the teams to Osborne and Hollis Roberts.
Meanwhile, play in the tournament opens today with Annai taking on Aishalton at the St. Ignatius Community Sports Club, starting at 15:00hrs.
