Reigning National Senior Chess Champion, Taffin Khan continues to dominate the sport when he won all four of his games to lead the points standing in the senior category when action in the annual Trophy Stall Chess tournament got underway at the Carifesta Sports Complex, Carifesta Avenue, over the past weekend.
Alexander Duncan, Maria Thomas, and Errol Tiwari jointly occupy the second place slot on 3 points apiece while Cleveland Hutson and Raymond Singh have accrued 2 ½ each; Glenford Corlette is in the cellar with 2 points.
Anthony Drayton and Haifeng Su have amassed 3 points each, the most by any other junior player and have assumed the lead in that category while Roberto Neto occupies the second place slot on 2 ½ points. Five other players in this category, Othniel Lewis, Rajiv Muneshwer, Joshua Pedro, Ron Motilall and Carlos Petterson are all bundled at the bottom on two points each.
Meanwhile, the tournament has had more than its fair share of upsets none more distinct than the duel between Canada based player, Raymond Singh, a former national senior champion of the late 1980’s, and junior player, Anthony Drayton; the latter player prevailed after employing shrewd tactics. Former junior champion, Haifeng Su also cashed in with a crushing victory over Singh.
The players will continue the battle for honours tomorrow afternoon when the 5th round will be contested from 17:30hrs while the final two rounds will be played next Sunday.
