Business owners at Robb and Savage Streets, Georgetown, are concerned about the erection of a building in a location that essentially seems to be posing health risks to those operating in surrounding structures.
Many complained yesterday that the space is inadequate to accommodate another building, as it is the size of a mere alleyway, and would therefore be too congested. They believe that the construction of anything that would block the area would prove to be a major safety hazard.
“In the case of a fire, this would be terrible. With all of these old buildings here, and that piece of place being so small,” one businessman said.
Another noted that the blocking of the path would result in tremendous discomfort to those who normally utilise the plot.
It was noted, for instance, that trucks would reverse onto the plot to deliver cooking gas to a nearby Chinese restaurant.
According to Dennis Dias, Managing Director of Connections Travel, he has been using the passageway as an entrance to his workshop for over 20 years, and that the blockage would prove to be of great inconvenience. He is asking that City Hall review the decision to grant the permission for construction to commence.
When contacted, Georgetown Mayor Hamilton Green said that he only learnt of the erection of the building yesterday morning, following a series of complaints from business people in the area.
Green noted that despite being the Mayor of the capital city, his permission was not sought for the venture. He does not even know who the plot has been sold or loaned to.
The Mayor also lamented that him being bypassed recently on major decisions is nothing new.
Meanwhile, others complained that they have made contact with the various officials at City Hall, but could not get a definite answer as to whom the building belongs.
They all made clear that the granting of that plot of land for construction is “nothing but ridiculous”.
