– Britton carts off lion’s share of awards
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony, while speaking at the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) and National Sports Commission (NSC) Awards Ceremony for its Independence tournament, urged the association to decentralise the sport.
“We had about close to 100 players participating, it shows that the sport is growing and you can be proud of that. They have had some ups and downs and they would normally go on some burst of energy as they go out into different regions,” Anthony said.
However, the Minister said that “they (those bursts of energy) would

quiet down but this (going out into regions) is what I want to see more of; I want you to spread the sport to different regions and I hope that the energy can be sustained.”
He said that he is peeved about the under utilisation of the table tennis boards that the ministry had handed out. He gave notice that the ministry will go on a campaign to repossess the boards from the schools that are not using them.
“We have given out boards, rackets and balls that have cost us and some schools are not utilising the boards. Some schools have the boards locked away and the children don’t have access to it and that should not be. What we will have to do is check the list to see the schools not using the boards and take them back and give them to other schools,” he posited.
The GTTA/NSC honoured their top achievers for the 2013 Edition of the Independence Table Tennis tournament at the National Gymnasium with 14-year old Shemar Britton carting off the lion’s share of the awards after winning the U-15, U-18, U-21 and Men’s Singles titles in the competition.
GTTA President, Godfrey Munroe said that the competitive level of the tournament was high. He believes that the tournament was a good way of helping young players understands what Guyana’s Independence means.
“I think table tennis is a sport that can take you a far way, and we all have to do our bit to move the sport and the country forward, so kudos to the youngsters that did well,” Munroe said, before recognising the efforts of the ministry.
“I think the support of the NSC and the Ministry have been great throughout and not just with this tournament alone; they have also sponsored workshops to help improve the sport and have also helped out national teams,” he said.
According to Munroe, the GTTA and NSC will be making efforts to start a search for talent programme in the schools in effort to gain more participation at the school’s level as St. Roses became the newest school to join the GTTA.
