…rode from Bagotville to Georgetown daily
Pandemonium broke out at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), yesterday, as the relatives of 80-year-old Helena Jones, the woman who rode daily to the city from Bagotville, West Bank Demerara for the past 25 years, confirmed their worst fears.
News of her sudden death sent shock waves throughout the community and her family.
Helena Jones, a mother of five, was pronounced dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) around 13:30 hours, after she was struck by a minibus, BKK1948 on the Houston Public Road, East Bank Demerara.
The 80-year-old woman who sells soft drinks on a cart at Regent and Alexander Streets was heading to her vending spot when she reportedly made a U-turn in front of the minibus.
Helena, who is known to many for riding her cycle from West Bank Demerara to the city, sustained multiple injuries while her cycle which was given to her by the Guyana Police Force a few years back was not badly damaged.
According to information received, the driver of the mini bus had taken his mother-in-law to the Cheddi Jagan Airport and was returning to the city when the accident occurred. As of late last night, he was at the Ruimveldt Police Station assisting with the investigation.
The dead woman’s son, Andrew Jones, told Kaieteur News that he last saw his mother a little before 13:00 hours yesterday when she visited his vulcanizing shop, also located on Bagotville, to put air in her tyre.
“She come and put air in her tyre and left to go to Georgetown to sell,” Andrew said while telling the police, “You gon see nothing would come out of this; just now they will loose he.”
The elderly woman’s daughter, Roxanne Jones, said she was at home when she received a call from someone informing her that her mother had met with an accident and had died. “When I go to the hospital, her whole body bruised up and like her skin dig out. Her head had a big hole and her bones break up.”
